Kano Pillars Go Down

ASPAC taste defeat, loses to Agosto 77-119



Defending champion of the FIBA Africa Champions Club for men, Primeiro d’Agosto looked unstoppable in the 2009 edition of the competition holding in Kigali, Rwanda with an emphatic 119-77 points win over ASPAC basketball club of Benin Republic.



ASPAC who gave a splinter of hope when it rallied to a 26-21 points first quarter but soon realised that the win was the tonic the defending champion needed to rise up to the occasion as it took the game beyond the reach of Cotonou-based Benin side winning the remaining three quarters by 35-15, 35-18 and 28-18 for a cumulative score-line of 119-77 points.



Though ASPAC combo guard, Mohammed Bukar scored a championship high of 31 points that does not stop his side from tasting defeat in the hands of the Agosot side led by reigning Africa Most Valuable Player, Joaqium Gomes who led his side with 16 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists.



Agosot Mario Correia contributed 16 points and 3 rebouns while the quartet of Filipe Abraao, Vladmir Jeronimo, Carlos Almeida and Rodreigo Mascarenhas added 12; 12; 11 and 10 points each.



Primeiro will be observing game Day-3 slated for Tuesday as off day while ASPAC will take on Cooperative Bank of Kenya as it continue its search for a first win.



ASPAC Head Coach, Peter Ahmedu gave kudos to his players for putting a spirited effort against the defending champion.



He, however, promised that his side would do everything within its power to pick it next game against Cooperative Bank today.

Kano Pillars go down to APR 77-92



Host APR Lions basketball club of Rwanda brightened its chances of a better placement in the quarter-final of the 24th FIBA Africa Champions Club for men with a 92-77 points victory over Nigeria Kano Pillars basketball club Monday evening in Kigali.



The APR side took the first three quarters by 19-13, 24-13 and 23-22 to take the sail out of their opponent whose effort could only yield a 31-26 point’s win in the last quarter.



APR guard, Mathew Millers led the floor with 22 points, 9 assists and 4 rebounds, Robert Thomson had a double double effort of 20 points, 11 rebounds, 5 block-shots and 2 assists, Cedric Isom poured in 16 points grabbed 9 rebounds and gave 3 assists while Calvin Fowler added 10 points for their side victory.



Kano Pillars guard, forward, Ibrahim Yusuf led his teammates with 17 points and 3 rebounds just as his teammate and guard, Abubakar Usman added 17 points.



Kano Pillars and APR Lions will have today as off day which will give both sides time to rest its players and evaluate their remaining games.



APR has Petro Atletico basketball club of Angola as its last group-A game on Thursday while Pillars still have the Angolan and ASB Mazembe to settle scores with on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

Unlucky Coop Bank bow to Interclub 75-83



Luck and determination played a big role in the game between Cooperative Bank basketball club of Kenya and Inter-club basketball club of Congo Brazzaville in a group-B played Monday night in the 24th FIBA Africa Champions Club for Men in Kigali, Rwanda.



The two factor, however, worked in favour of Interclub-club who were not ready to drop a second straight game in the preliminary after its Sunday 115-74 points lose to defending champion beating the Cooperative Bank side to their game winning the first two quarters by 24-19 and 22-08 points to take a 46-27 lead going into the break.



The Kenyan club-side tried to fight back at the resumption of play in the third quarter and fought quarter but their effort could only yield them a 26-16 and 22-21 points win to bow to the more determined Brazzaville-based side Interclub by 83-75 points.



Inter-club Bertrand Boukinda proved a worthy reliance for his side when he posted a competition high of 32 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals, Ghislain Elenga added 16 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds to suppress the Cooperative Bank side.



John Okwako led the Cooperative Bank side with 28 points, 4 steals and 3 rebounds while the duo of Allan Ouma and Eugene Genga added 12 and 10 points each.



Inter-club will take to the floor on game Day-3 today against Warriors basketball club of Uganda while Cooperative Bank must be at its best when it face ASPAC basketball club of Benin Republic .

Lagos Receives Commonwealth Queen’s Baton.

The Lagos State Government is set to receive Queen's Baton ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games to be hosted by India.


According to the State's Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Social Development, Prince Ademola Adeniji- Adele, the state would receive the baton this Sunday as the Baton which would arrive in Abuja this Friday would be received at the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos.

The State's Commissioner for Sports, will receive the baton and thereafter presented it to His Excellency, Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, at the State House.

Queen’s Baton will then be conveyed around the City of Lagos in the State’s double Decker buses.

The event will be rounded off with a Cocktail at the State House, Ikeja.

Eyo Effiong Wins Lagos State Triathlon Event

Eyo Effiong has emerged the winner of the second edition of the just concluded Lagos State Triathlon Association as over twenty athletes featured in the tournament.

Effiong who won the maiden edition with a time two hours twenty six second thirty second breasted the tap to win the tournament with cash prize of Five thousand Naira.

The feat recorded by Effiong was a sign of improvement over the first edition as the athlete focussed more on biking and running to win the competition which was hosted by the Apapa Local Government Area.

Adeyemi Ismaila who clinched the sixth position during the first edition came second with a time of two hours twenty seven minutes and seventeen seconds to grab a cash prize of three thousand Naira.

While Lekan Badmus who picked silver medal at the first edition settled for the third position two hours forty minutes and thirty six seconds just as Lilian Odumegwu came first in the female category.

To odumegwu , it was a tears of joy to win the race after Lilain Okafor subjected her to emotional torture for wining the maiden edition.

Odumegwu clinched the gold medal with three hours twenty minutes and nine seconds as Okafor settled for the second position with a time of Three hours twenty three minutes and twenty five seconds.

The Chairman of the Association, Sikuade Jagun, said the association decided to for go Duathlon instead of Triathlon because there was no swimmable water in Apapa, thus the reason they adopted Duathlon which entails Run - Biking and Run.

Jagun, said the tournament was moved to Apapa with a move to popularise the sport which is still new in Nigeria and it is their responsibility to give the sport a facelift.

He assured that the sport wold be moved to Surulere Local Government next month as there are plans to encourage triathlon clubs to register with the association in a bid to provide necessary equipment which is the bane of the sport.

Oneya Expresses Dissatisfaction Over Non Inclussion Of Nigerian Players In CAF Award

The former Chairman of the then Nigeria Football Association, Dominic Oneya, has expressed dissatisaction with the inability of Nigeria football players to make the list of African players shortlisted for this year's Glo- CAF African Player of the year.

Oneya, who had Victor Ikepa as the African Football Player of Year Award during his rein as the NFA Chairman, said non of theNigerian football players have won the award in the last five years and it becomes the responsibility of the Nigeria Football Federation to find a lasting solution to the development of football at the grassroot level.

The former Military Administrator, said the trend has shown that other african countries have braced up to improve their standard of football, hence the reason that some of the players who were shortlisted for last year's edition made this year's version of the award.

Oneya, who commended the nominated African football players for their efforts and making africa proud at their respective national and clubsides in Europe, hoped that Nigerian football player would be among the nominated player in subsequent editions.

The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has named five african football players that were nominated for tis year's GLO- CAF African Football players Award billed for Twenty fifth of February, next year, in Dakar, Senegal.

Chelsea and CoteD'Ivoire striker, Didier Drogba tops the list of African football players noinated for the yearly CAFAward followed by Ghana's and Chelsea midfielder, Micheal Essien, Samuel Eto'o of Inter Milan and Cameroon, Saidu Kaita of Mali and Barcelona and Toure Yaya of Cote D'Ivoire and Barcelona.

CAF Director of Communication, Suleimon Habuba, said the Federation's media and technical committees selected the topic five football players based on order of importnace as the afte of the winner would would determinedd by the voting of fifty three African national coaches.

He said CAF have respect for the committeessaddled with the responsibility of selecting the award winner as the Confederation has never doubted the integrity of the committees to pick the winner.

He saidCAF in its usual character has data base of all the fifty three national coaches that would vote to select the winner, stressing that selection is always free and afir as the Confederation has a detail of who the coaches voted for.

Habuba, said the Confederation is still working hard to have a precise date that would be appropirate for all the nominated players, adding that the English Premier league and FIFA events have been an obstacle to their quest of having an harmonised calendar.

Ikpeba Tips Essien To Win African Footballer Award.

Former Super Eagles and Monaco Striker, Victor Ikpeba, has tipped Chelsea F.C and Black Stars of Ghana midfielder, Micheal Essien, to win tis year's GLO- CAF African Football Award.

Ikpeba, who made this statement while speaking with EKOFM Sports Correspondent, said the Ghanaian midfielder has been consistent and dogged in his approach to every match and he has been able to exhibit african skills to the admiratio of European coaches.

The former Prince of Monaco, said Essien deserve to win the award because he is one of the african great footballing export as a midfielder who combine the ability to score goals from anywhere.

The former Super Eagles winger, said Inter Milan and Cameroon striker, Samuel Eto'o is another african player who stand a chance to win the award.

Ikpeba Urges Super Eagles To Buckle Up..

Super Eagles players have been charged to step up their style of play in a bid to make leadway in the forthcoming 2010 African Nations Cup and FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Former Super Eagles winger, Victor Ikpeba, who revealed this in an interview with Naijasport.blogspot.com, said it was disheartening that non of the Super Eagles players were nominated for the Glo- CAF African Football er Award which has eluded the country in the last five years.

Te former Prince of Monaco, said non of the Super Eagles are playing top flight football in respected football clubs in Europeexcept Chelsea F.C player, Mikel Obi, who plays for the club regularly in the English Premier League and European Champions League.

He said the award has favoured african strikers and the move showed that Nigerian strikers have to work hard to be among the payers who could win the award in subsequent editions.

Obaseki Condenms Neglects Of Premier League Players

The Nigeria Premier League,NPL, has condemned the non inclussion of the nation's Premier League players in the provisional list of Super Eagles players preparartory to the 2010 African Nations Cup in Angola.

Its Chairman, Oyuiki Obaseki, said the premier league could produced three different teams which would defeat the Super Eagles in a competitive tournament because they are are conpetent and in the mood to fight for a place in the national team based on their soccer prowess.

He said the national coaches did not visit match venues during league matches to search for quality players whom they could expose totough matches to garner experience to compete with other african teams.

Obaseki, said the Nigeria's permier league would be improved to meet the international standard as the league body is working hard to add value to the fortune of Nigerian league players.
